Chief of Military Personnel responds to Ombudsman's request for an update on recommendations in military families report

23 September 2014

Mr. Gary Walbourne, Ombudsman
Office of the Ombudsman
Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces
Urbandale Building
100 Metcalfe St, 12th Floor
Ottawa, ON K1P 5M1

Dear Mr. Walbourne,

Thank you for your letter to the Chief of Defence Staff prompting an update to your predecessor’s report, On the Homefront: Assessing the Well-being of Canada’s Military Families in the New Millenium. Caring for our members and their families remains one of the Chief of Defence Staff, and my, top priorities.

As you know, we have the opportunity to review the report when it was in draft form and provided substantive comments, which your Office was kind enough to include in the final report. Our actions since that rime have been informed by, not only your report, but other credible sources of insight, such as the Chief of Review Services report on family support and the Standing Committee on National Defence.

We are already well on the way to completing a comprehensive update on our further response to your Report’s recommendations, which is being prepared to coincide with the one year anniversary of your Report. The Chief of the Defence Staff, therefore, asked me to let you know that he will be pleased to share our comprehensive update in November 2014.

Yours sincerely,

D.B Millar
Lieutenant-General
