Federal Court Decision - Clawback of Disability Benefits

I welcome the Federal Court decision of May 1, 2012 regarding the clawback of disability benefits from Canada’s veterans. As far back as 2003, our office identified this government policy as grossly unfair.

Those who are suffering – former Canadian Forces members who have had to retire as a result of their injuries – are the most disadvantaged of our veterans. They often suffer from serious psychological or physical injuries incurred while serving their country. And yet they are penalized – in some cases, severely penalized – by rules which must be changed.

We call on the government, independent of court proceedings, to fix this fundamental unfairness and make things right for those who have given up so much for Canada and Canadians.
